Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Books I HAD To Buy...But Are Still Sitting On My Shelf Unread

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Broke and The Bookish. I heart lists!

I could completely cheat this week and just say everything that is unread on my shelves, but that would take away all the fun.  These books are ones that I either pre-ordered or rushed out to buy the MOMENT I realised they had been released and then never got to them - some are very old and a couple more recent.

Need more time people, more time!

Article 5 (Article 5 #1) by Kristen Simmons - on my shelf since 5 February 2012.
As soon as I read the synopsis for Article 5, I pre-ordered it on Kindle.  It arrived promptly on release day and has sat there ever since.  I still haven't bought the second book in the series, of which I'm quite proud, but it looks like it may be waiting for some time yet.

Cinder (Lunar Chronicles #1) by Marissa Meyer - on my shelf since 2 February 2012.
There is no excuse for this, really.  Another Kindle pre-order that still sits, unopened, where it landed.

The Diviners (The Diviners #1) by Libba Bray - on my shelf since 6 January 2013.
A more recent arrival, but after all the gushing reviews I had to get a copy.  It was hideously expensive and yet it's still unread....

Insurgent (Divergent #2) by Veronica Roth - on my shelf since 19 May 2012.
I quite enjoyed Divergent, and then got caught up in the hype and pre-ordered Insurgent.  At least I know there are other people who haven't read their copy yet, so I don't feel SO bad ;-)

The Knife of Never Letting Go (Chaos Walking #1) by Patrick Ness - on my shelf since 23 January 2012.
I only started reading YA at the end of 2011, so this was one of the first books that I became obsessed with getting my hands on.  Don't worry though, it's got book three (random!) to keep it company on the unread shelf....

Legend (Legend #1) by Marie Lu - on my shelf since 12 February 2012.
Yet another Kindle pre-order - I see a pattern here, maybe I should start pre-ordering in hard/paper back, they seem to stand a better chance of actually being read.

Paper Valentine by Brenna Yovanoff - on my shelf since 6 January 2013.
A recent addition but one that I'd been relentlessly stalking the early reviews of.  Even the 'Kindle' excuse won't work here as I have a paperback copy.

Rage Within (Dark Inside #2) by Jeyn Roberts - on my shelf since 27 October 2012.
OK, hands up who else goes out and immediately buys the next book in a series and then gets distracted?  That's exactly what happened with Rage Within - as soon as I finished Dark Inside, I bought the Kindle version of Rage Within, and still haven't read it.

Survivors (Morningstar Strain #3) by Z.A. Recht - on my shelf since 19 June 2012.
I've owned a copy since June 2012, but actually put it on my wishlist in November 2011 when it was announced as an upcoming publication. I have a legitimate excuse for this one - I want to re-read the first two books, plus I'm a little scared of reading it after the reviews weren't that stellar....

Wanderlove by Kirsten Hubbard - on my shelf since 6 January 2013.
I was slow catching onto this one, but I read lots of awesome reviews and then tracked down a beautiful hardback copy.  That's still on my shelf.

Wow that was a difficult, and slightly embarrassing list.  Which books are still waiting for you?

  1. The Diviners and The Knife of Never Letting Go are both great reads!! I still have Insurgent sitting on my shelf.. which is crazy since I loved Divergent, maybe it;s second book syndrome?? lol.

And I still need to actually buy Article 5 and Cinder!

New follower by the way :)

    1. I really really need to read The Diviners, everyone loves it..must get to that!

I'm always late reading second books, I think I'm scared that I won't enjoy it as much as the first one.

  2. I have many of those same books still waiting to be read or purchased. I personally liked The Morningstar Strain series by Z.A. Recht to each their own I guess *shrug*

    1. I loved the first two books, but I know some people were disappointed in the third. Plus, I hate finishing series that I love!

  3. Yeah, you need to work on this Kat. About half of these are ones I read and really liked. You are, however, permitted to never have to suffer through Insurgent, since I didn't like Divergent. ;)

    1. I am a bad bad reader and consider myself chastened.

Damn hype machine, sometimes it just slips under my radar.

  4. I have a few of these too - Legend, Dark Inside (holding back on getting book 2 until I read this one!), Wanderlove, The Diviners. I did finally read Insurgent earlier this year, that one had been hanging around since it came out; always gives me a good feeling to mentally cross off a book that's been languishing like that. :)

    1. It is a great feeling to finally get those languishers read!

Dark Inside was fabulous, I can't believe I didn't go straight to the second one!

  5. Ooh, DIVERGENT is on my list. I actually have INSURGENT as well - you'd think that would put more pressure on me but apparently it doesn't!

  6. My list (which I still have not posted) is just as embarrassing. ;) I want to buy Paper Valentine!

  7. Soooo many amazing books on your list, Kat! I'd really love to read Legend, The Knife of Never Letting Go and Paper Valentine, though I don't own them... yet.

I literally just got Cinder this week so hopefully that'll be one of the next books that I read. Hopefully being the operative word in that sentence. I wasn't totally moved by Insurgent but it could be because I read the series pretty much immediately after the Hunger Games and I wasn't quite ready for it yet. We'll give this one another go before commenting on it. As for Survivors... oh man. I get that there are going to be differences in the style because Recht is, unfortuantely, no longer with us but I wasn't expecting it to be that bad. It makes me wish I never read it at all, if only for the fact that I could still preserve some semblence of the actual characters that Recht created. It makes me sad.

As for The Diviners --- I know the length is somewhat intimidating but I promise you, it'll fly by. Trust me on this one. SO FREAKING GOOD.

    1. You know you are the one that made me most scared of Survivors, right? ;-)

Can't wait to hear what you think of Cinder!

    2. Haha, my bad! I really tried hard to keep my expectations in check with that one but, man...

I'll definitely let you know about Cinder once I read it. Delving into Veronica Rossi's 'Through The Ever Night' right now.

  8. I know how that happens. I have but not read The Hunger Game series, Grave Mercy, Cinder, The Knife of never letting go, Insurgent and a couple more.

    P.S. Read Wanderlove right now!!

  9. Rage Within is on my list too. I bought it as soon as I saw it and never read it, which bugs me because I LOVED Dark Inside. I almost put The Knife of Never Letting Go on my list, I've started it before but then got distracted and never continued with it. I definitely need to rectify that soon. Great list!

  10. I had Cinder for quite a while before I read it, but getting an ARC of Scarlet spurred me to read it. It's good--not great. Most of the others I've never read.

    1. I've had ARCs do that to me with several series, like Under the Never Sky - and then I loved it after all that waiting.

  11. I still have Cinder & Insurgent to read too! You gotta read Legend - so good! Great list! :D

  12. I don't even want to look at my shelves to compile this list lol I would feel awful. I don't pre-order too many things anymore. Maybe 2-3 books per year but I find even with that I don't read them right away anymore.

    1. I rarely pre-order either, because deep down I know it's just not going to get read straight away. I buy it a week after release instead :-|

  13. Great list! Diviners and Legend are on my list, too!

I need to read Cinder. Insurgent was definitely a step down from Divergent IMO

  14. Cinder and Insurgent are great reads, but I really want to read Article 5, The Diviners and Wanderlove...and at some point, I'd also like to read The Knife Of Letting Go. Great list!

  15. I had Cinder on myself for awhile and finally read it in February and couldn't BELIEVE I had waited so long. It really was just as good as everyone says. Your lucky to have not read Insurgent... most of us are slowing dying for the third one, atleast you will be able to read it all at once :)

  16. I have The Knife of Letting Go on my shelf too! I didn't get it when it just came out, I snagged it when it was on sale kind of recently (like last year? hah) I am surprised I haven't forked over dough for Cinder yet, I've heard so much good about it!

I hope all of our books as are wonderful as the hype surrounding them is! :D

  17. No overlap, and my list is huge. I am not sure which is worse, cost of shipping used books, or $ .99 e-book specials.

I wonder how many catastrophe survival novels are going to be named "Survivors" before it all really does come to an end?

  18. I really liked CINDER, as well as SCARLET! THE DIVINERS has been on my wishlist for awhile.

  20. It took for ever for me to read my copy of Insurgent, and it was only because someone asked me to as a buddy read. You have a list of great looking reads though. I've only read Cinder and I adored it.
